Therapist Spotlight: Ashley Rone, LLMSW

Why did you become a therapist?

On a very personal level I experienced the impact one person can make.  One person can change the life of another.  I became a therapist not to be the "one person" like I am a superhero but to give hope that there are people out there who care, who see you, and who hear you.  The Trevor Project released data showing having at least one accepting adult can reduce the risk of a suicide attempt among LGBTQ young people by 40 percent.  I want others to know their life matters and they are deserving of one worth living.

What are some of your favorite books?

I really enjoyed reading Untamed by Glennon Doyle.  This book is full of messages of trusting yourself, harnessing your power, and not only being your authentic self but being proud of your authentic self.  These messages are  something so many could benefit from reading.  She writes in a way that feels like she is talking to you.   I also loved Atomic Habits.  It is full of ways to be more aligned with your goals, change habits, and gets you thinking about your environment.

What do you like to do outside of the therapy room?

I love being outdoors!  You can find me on a walk with my fiance and two dogs, elbow deep in dirt in my garden, or just sitting outside by water.  I feel really lucky to be surrounded by so much water in this state.  My other big hobby is working out.  My undergrad is Kinesiology and Exercise Science.

What do you do for self care?

As a human but also a therapist, I feel all the feels too.  A big part of my self care and coping is I also attend therapy.  I do my best to be kind and compassionate to myself and ask for help when I need it.  Working out is also a big self care for me.  Moving my body and heavy weights always makes me feel good.

What do your clients say about you as a therapist?

My clients share that they feel safe with me.  They share parts of their life they haven't expressed before because of shame or fear.  I come from an open mind and non judgemental place that makes them feel comfortable.  I can connect with clients in many ways.
